GOC/OCC Elective Grant
In 2006, Ovarian Cancer Canada (OCC) partnered with The Society of Gynecologic Oncology of Canada (GOC) to provide grants to obstetrics and gynaecology residents who choose gynecologic oncology as an elective. A monetary award of $1,500 would cover travel and housing to a cancer centre to work with a gynecologic oncology team during a one month elective.
Local cancer teams will assist with finding affordable housing. Guidelines and a selection process have been developed by GOC and are outlined below. The GOC will also consider any additional costs incurred with respect to provincial licensing requirements. The desired outcome is an increase in the number of ob-gyn residents who choose this specialty and remain in Canada to practice.
How to apply?
1. Resident sends email/letter to GOC expressing interest in elective and indicates which centre is of interest
2. GOC gets resident and local gynecologic oncologist (sponsor) to meet. The local gynecologic oncologist will become the sponsor
3. Resident gets sponsoring gynecologic oncologist to send email/letter to GOC confirming sponsorship
4. Sponsoring gynecologic oncologist links the resident and gynecologic oncologist at centre where student wishes to go
5. Resident gets sponsoring gynecologic oncologist to send e-mail/letter to GOC confirming available position
6. Resident gets his/her Post-Grad Program Director to send email/letter of support to GOC
7. Resident makes his/her own arrangements for accommodations with help of sponsoring centre through local University
8. Once arrangements are made, GOC issues payment 4-6 weeks prior to Elective.
